feeedback time.....

so now the music video is completed, we need to hear what the other members of our group think of our finished product. the comments are as follows-

GROUP 35 SAID-

- lip sync in time, and performed well
- setting fits well with the theme of music (river)
- use of camera is good, used hand held and tripod.
- old fashioned effect good.

GROUP 34 SAID

- lip synching in time and performed well
- number of shots well used (both handheld and tripod)
- lots of transitions
- good location

ON THE OTHER HAND THEY SAID-

- not sure about the constantly changing sepia (well we were, so there!)

GROUP 33 SAID

- well lip synched and very enthusiastic
- matched the song well

ON THE OTHER HAND THEY SAID

- camera work basic (look who's talking)
- use of some clips made the song seem repetitive (pot calling the kettle?)
- didnt get the costume, why topless? (why not tho? you had a priest in yours!)

the penultimate practical lesson

so, we have only one lesson left to add the finishing touches to our video. if we are honest, we could say we are fairly comfortable in publishing our video right now and getting a decent grade for it as well.

but its fairly pointless for us to do that now, as we still have a valuable 2-3 hours left to tinker with our video a little more just to be absolutely certain we can get a good grade for our work.

something tells me were into something good =]

OUR LAST WEEK

so, for our last week of filming we are putting the finishing touches to our media video. we dont feel the need to come into the media room out of hours because there is very little else that requires attention before we publish our video on friday.

the things that do need to be done are-

- filters (RGB filters etc.)
- final shot of guitar floating down the river.
- add some dissolves where needed.

if we are honest, we are not really panicking about fridays deadline =]

our objectives for today

now that our footage is uploaded, we can start placing it with the sound track. there are some small concerns that this will be too time consuming, but the high resolution of the video track is reason enough to persevere with it.

we still aren't sure whether or not to use footage from the college camera's, as the difference in video quality could be noticeable when changing shots through the video. the most important thing now however, is to get the footage taken from the HD camera and link that up to the soundtrack.

that is what lucy, olly and kirk are doing whilst i write this awesome blog. :)

looking at new footage

after a couple of frustrating lessons, where lack of footage prevented us from advancing further with our project, we have now got our new footage uploaded to our computer. despite there being no sound on the video, we are hopeful that we can still link up the video track to the actions on screen.

our lesson today will be spent viewing the footage uploaded, renaming it to allow us to recognize the clips quickly, and then, time permitting, we will add this to our time line.

good times.

Rouch cut feedback

In today's lesson we watched everyone's rough cut. We realised that compared to most groups we don't have to panic about our problems because we're not the only group with them. We are pleased with our rough cut considering it's only one quarter of our footage. We have had some technical problems. We filmed using two cameras. One camera was the college's and one was our friend Kirk's. Kirk's camera doesn't play audio on the college's macs and we cannot upload it any other way. We have managed to use a PC to convert the video onto a blank DVD. For some reason the Macs don't recognise the footage on the DVD's so our teacher is having to burn the DVD onto a PC and then put it onto a hard drive and then put it onto the mac's using a firewire. A lot of hassle but but we can't lose our footage! wish us luck!

alternate music video by kk productions

This video below was created by groups 36's good friend and cameraman Kirk Kemp, who in his spare time was able to have a crack at his own rough cut out of our music video, obviously we cant use the video for our own as it is not our work.

However we do feel that Kirk should get credit for it as this is all his own work, done in his own spare time. Kirk is a media diploma student who is learning fast through helping our group, and his video is a promising sign of things to come.

here is Kirks video-

Shooting the video

On Thursday the 2nd and Friday the 3rd of October we filmed our music video. We ventured down to a small river in Little Shelford with overgrown trees and crisp autumn leaves on the banks.
The two days were productive and we got many different performance shots. The River had a bridge over it with three tunnels. We created some affective shots with the three band members in the tunnels. We used two camera on the shoot. One was the College's camera and the other was our friend Kirk's snazzy HD camera. We filmed the same shots with both cameras which is a great benefit for us because it means double the footage for us to play around with.

Here are some of the pictures from the video Shoot:

Practice Shots

This evening i drove down to Little Shelford where we will be hopefully filming our video to get some test shots/pictures.
Sorry about the poor quality, only had a crappy camera phone on me.

Here is a video i quickly edited and some blurry pictures:

We would also like to announce that our close friend Kirk who does Media Studies Diploma has agreed to be on the crew for the shoot and will be supplying a speaker and HD camera.

Location ideas

This is the River Cam. The river runs from Cambridge and down through Shelford. We are thinking of filming by a small river that has branched off from the Cam. the river runs under a small bridge and is covered by trees. The Trees create a dingey and dark feel to the place.

Past Student work

We have been looking at student work from last year and there are 2 videos that caught our eye.

The first is Girl Love:

We like this video because their camerawork changes frequently throughout the video and the video is at a pace that matches the music.

The second one is She's an eyeful on the alley:

We like this video because the setting is brilliant, the band shots work very well and the lip syncing matches. Very good video that matches the genre.

Kid Harpoon Message

The other day Lucy sent Kid Harpoon a message through myspace and he has recently replied.
Here is the original message and reply:

Its a hard song to make a video for because it has a story in it. One video I did for it tried to do the story, but it didn't work.

Good luck.

Hello,

I am a media student in Cambridge and for our coursework project we have been given a handful of songs that we have to create a music video for. One of the songs in the selection is your song called 'Riverside.' My Group have chosen yoru song and i was wondering if you had any ideas that you'd like to put forward or any ideas that you did have for your video that did not get used in the final version.
I look forward to your reply,
Lucy.

GROUP 36 - Music Video Animatic

So today myself, Lucy and Olly are putting the finishing touches to our animatic. We have now processed it onto film and have uploaded it onto youtube.com. Here is the finished animatic, its not as long as the actual song, but it should give us some pointers on what way we need to film the video.

AMENDMENT- the video isn't quite up yet due to a rendering issue, but we have been informed that they will be up shortly.

Storyboards 16/09/08

For the next 2 lessons, we have been drawing a storyboard to use in our animatic. an animatic is a short piece of film capturing our initial ideas on paper. we then film the drawings we have produced as if it were the real thing (if that makes any sense!)

so as lucy and olly work on the storyboards, it gives me the chance to work on some set finding. of course our group is going to need a river, to fit in with the lyrics of the song. also we need to make it far enough away from the public eye to get no interference with passers by. there are plenty of places we could go that fit those criteria, such as-

the river Granta near Whittlesford, Cambridge.

the river Granta in shelford, Cambridge.

photos to come up soon.

producing a cd track timeline (9-9-08)

Today U1-36 is compiling a music video time line to aid us when it comes to thinking of ideas for our music video and shooting the video itself. We have done this by having 4 sheets of a4 paper with a grid printed in the middle of it. The grid is divided up into 12 blocks, each representing 5 seconds of the song.

The song we have chosen, "Riverside" by Kid Harpoon, lasts 4 minutes and 13 seconds, and we hope to trim this down by approximately 30 seconds to a minute. This way we reduce the workload for us so we can focus more on smaller parts of the song.

On each of the aforementioned blocks, we have written below exactly what is going on in those 5 seconds in the song in regards to the lyrics, guitar, bass and drums. This way, when we get into the business of shooting the video we can use the sheet to find out where we are, what we have done, and what may need doing still.

Lucy's Homework.

Olly pointed out to me that we had chosen the same video as our inspiration, so we are sharing that video and i did an extra bit of homework by making a list of ideas.
These are the points on my list..

-CRAZY OUTFITS/MASKS.
-Plain coloured costumes.(Bright colours)
-Shots of the video on the news/CCTV
-sort of a RIOT in it.
-clashing colours.
-Everyone running around nd then meet in the 'riverside' (hang our place)
-perform a large dance
-Lots of activits
-Constant energy.

Olly's Video Idea

Here is a video that has inspired me, the whole concept is truly random and just like the film, "The Warriors". Different groups of people in masks walk around causing trouble like gangs.

It is called "Never Miss A Beat" by The Kaiser Chiefs.

dom's video idea

When i first heard the song i liked the way that you could interpret the lyrics as completely anything, and the music video could be based on what you thought the song meant.

i liked the idea of black and white in a video and we (as might have been mentioned before) want to change the style of the video to make it more upbeat.

therefore, i chose this song as my inspiriation. its "Im Going Slightly Mad" by Queen. i like it because it is totally crazy, and uses so many different props in the video. it is also entirely (apart from John Deacon's jester hat) in black and white.

videos we are INSPIRED by...

During a late Sunday night MSN conversation Olly showed Lucy a music video which is now the main inspiration for our media project. We like how there is not much performance in it and how everyone is full of energy.

Here it is...

Lyrics

These are the lyrics to our chosen song.

Riverside by Kid Harpoon

As you can tell, the lyrics seem quite depressing but our goal is to change this around and we're going to interpret the lyrics with a positive attitude to try and create a happy and energetic music video :D

I will wait for you, by the riverside
By the river
It's quiet down there at night
By the riverside

Let's fish for gold and throw off our rags
Paint a new scene where the shopping trolley snags, and we're in
Into the river

I will watch you sink, to the river bed
Ripped then washed then laid
On the river bed

I do believe that I had no choice
You have another now you're paying the price, for the high-life
Into the river

I turn back round to head for land, and saw the oyster in my hand
Spit the pearl into the sea
I paddled franticly back down, to where I left there on the ground
Where I put her gently off to sleep

I will wait for you, to come up for air
Say my sorry's, praise the lord
It will be good to have you here

Things ebb before they flow
Just like the summer, needs to have snow
We need light, we need dark
Before you take off, you must come down
Come down, come down, come down, come down, come down, come down
Down, down, down, down, down by the river

There is life and then there is none
We need moisture, combined with the sun
So we can tap-dance
Create lights
Into the river we climb in at night

U1 - MUSIC VIDEO CD TRACKS 2008/9

U1 - MUSIC VIDEO CD TRACKS 2008/9

when starting our project we were presented with 13 different choices of music, all a bit different from one another. we had the task of picking not the one we liked the most in terms of music, but we would have to pick the video that seemed most feasible when it came to making a music video.

this means we had to consider all possibilities when listening to the tracks. we were all originally split on what we wanted to do, with Lucy preferring track 6 (Riverside- kid harpoon), Olly leaning towards track 7 (Grip Like A Vice- The Go Team) and myself pushing to do track 11 (Beast- Vincent Vincent And The Villains). we eventually decided that the best track to do would be Lucy's choice. this was due to the track i wanted to do was a bit too difficult to find a location for, and Olly's choice had a female lead singer, something Lucy was not willing to do.

so our choice is track 7: Riverside- Kid Harpoon.

1. One More Chance - Candie Payne 3:25
2. Is Everyone Happy? - Jane Weaver and the Meadows 3:33
3. Harm's Way - Waco Brothers 2:42
4. Troubled Mind - The Buff Medways 2:12
5. I Don't Care What You Call Me - David Ford 6:31
6. Riverside - Kid Harpoon 4:11
7. Grip Like A Vice - The Go Team 4:04
8. Something Like That - Tim McGraw 3:03
9. Falling Like Stars - The Bird 4:42
10. Rock Boys - The Grates 2:36
11. Beast - Vincent Vincent & The Villains 4:05
12. Stop Complaining (Morcheeba Remix) - Lyrics Born 3:38
13. On Sussex Downs - Large Love 3:17
